Chapter 8 Summary

Lou's tale begins with his first awareness of the killing of Beau Boutan. He tries to figure out who could have killed Beau. All the young people have left Marshall Quarters, leaving only old people and some children. He thinks of Charlie but dismisses that possibility since Beau has treated Charlie like a dog many times, with no reaction from Charlie. Janey was hysterical over the phone, telling him only that Candy needed him, which after three years as her boyfriend he had trouble believing. He speeds from Baton Rouge to Marshall. The houses along the narrow road of the quarters seem deserted. Knowing about the Boutans, Lou figures it was smart of the people to leave.

Lou reaches Mathu's house and is greeted by Candy, who tells him she killed Beau. He starts.....
