Chapter 3 Summary

Miss Merle has had her servant, Lucy, bake an apple pie for her to give to Jack. Miss Merle wishes Jack liked her as much as he liked apple pie. She has wished this for many years. She goes to Marshall, where Jack and Bea live, to give Jack the pie. Janey meets her in the yard and tells her what has happened. Meanwhile, Miss Merle notices that Jack is passed out drunk. Miss Merle forgets about the pie and hurries to the quarters. She sees the tractor still running, as Snookum did. She sees Candy's black LTD. She assumes all the people are hiding in their houses, but when she gets to Mathu's, she sees that Mathu, Johnny Paul and Rufe are all on the porch holding shotguns. The women and children.....
