Summary

Chapter Five, “The Questers Decide on a Direction” begins as Tanitha questions Anya’s assertion she will do her quest alone, and tells her Ardent is also overdue for a Quest. The other royal dogs deliver their bundles including bones, coins, clothing, a knife, a water bottle, and some diamonds. Anya gives the bones to the dogs and they go back to the castle, while Anya and Ardent start walking, but Anya wishes the dogs had brought more money than bones. Anya decides to walk towards Denholm’s kingdom called Gornish, and ask Denholm’s parents for help. Anya opens the recipe for lip balm, which includes a pint of witches tears, feathers from a cockatrice freshly pulled, blood from a retired druid, three-day-old hail, beeswax, pawpaw for flavor, and requires a special stirring rod made of a lightning-struck oak.
