Chapter 111 Summary
Smokey Lonesome is sitting in The Jimmy Hatcher Downtown Rescue Mission on January 23, 1969. After he left the café, he wandered around and briefly held a job, but had been fired for drinking too much. Brother Jimmy had found him passed out and brought him to the mission. Smokey had lived there for fifteen years. Smokey was in charge of the food at the mission. He sees men who were once professionals at the shelter. Jimmy told him disappointment over a woman is the main cause of men down on their luck.
Jimmy had died six months ago and the mission was being torn down. Smokey would be on the road again. He leaves the mission and starts walking in the direction of Whistle Stop. He thinks about the woman he loved, Ruth. Although he has slept with many women, he only ever loved her. She never knew, but...
