Chapter 104 Summary
Jasper is riding on a train outside Roanoke, Virginia on December 23, 1958. He is a month away from his retirement. He and his brother lived much different lives. When Jasper arrived in Birmingham, he lived in a Christian boarding home and went to church the first Sunday he was in town. He met his future wife that day. Her family was well respected and Jasper became part of the upper middle class black society in Birmingham. He worked hard to save money for a home, college for his children and even a piano in the house. Through the years, he endured racist remarks from customers and lack of respect from his bosses. He was respectful, helpful and a hard worker. He loved the trains as much as his brother had loved the city.
