On January 12, 1944, a train carrying soldiers home is heading for Birmingham. The train stops in Whistle Stop to bring the body of Willie Boy Peavy home to his family. Idgie speaks during the funeral and most of the town attends the funeral in Troutville. Willie Boy did not die in combat, but because of a fight over his father. A fellow soldier named Winston Lewis had called Big George an Uncle Tom because he works for white people. Willie Boy hit him in the face with a beer bottle.
