On November 20, 1940, Artis Peavy is running down the street in Chicago. He is hiding from a woman named Electra Green. He often gets into trouble with women and their husbands. He has suffered stab wounds and broken bones from some of these encounters. The situation with Electra is serious because she is looking for him armed with a .38 revolver. He decides to return to Birmingham.
He loves Birmingham like many men love their wives. Birmingham is the city hardest hit by the Depression and is the murder capital of the south. It is also the best circus city in the south and has the highest Sunday.....
