Chapter 56 Summary
This chapter takes place in Whistle Stop on October 17, 1940. Vesta Adcock had a big mouth and had dubbed herself president of the "I'm Better Than Anyone Else Club." She was married to Earl Adcock, who was a decent man. She treats him badly and is always screaming at him. He stays with her because he has vowed to do so. When their only child is grown and Earl retires, he signs over his pension to Vesta and leaves. Everyone in town cheers him on secretly.
Chapter 56 Analysis
It is ironic that Vesta spends her life thinking she is better than anyone else, only to end up in the nursing home suffering from dementia. Earl is a good man, who takes her abuse until he can't take it any longer. Women aren't the only ones who can be abused in a marriage. Earl spent years being emotionally abused by his wife.
