Chapter 45 Summary
"Religious Sewing Machines a Fraud" is the headline of the December 30, 1939 edition of The Weems Weekly. A man was in town selling sewing machines. He told his customers the machines were religious and could heal you as you sew. The machines were supposed to be from France, but were actually made in Chattanooga. Biddie Louise Otis had thought her machine helped her arthritis and was upset to find out they were a fraud. Other news includes merit badges received by several Boy Scouts in town. Their leader is Julian Threadgoode and he took them to Birmingham as a reward. Opal asks her neighbors not to feed her cat anymore, because she is too fat. Dot asks her readers to keep a look out for Wilbur's National Geographic. He is upset because he left it in town and isn't finished reading it yet.
