Chapter 42 Summary

This chapter takes place in Chicago, Illinois on December 3, 1938. Smokey is traveling with a young man he had met a month previously in Michigan. When Smokey met the kid, he tried to tell him to go home. The kid didn't listen, but does listen to Smokey's stories of life on the road. He asks Smokey about the jobs he has had. Smokey tells him about working in a hamburger joint, a coalmine and a turpentine mill. The last was the worst job he ever held.

They spend the night in a hobo camp. During the night, the American Legion raids the camp. All the men run, but Smokey hides in bushes because his lungs are not good. When he comes out, he finds the kid lying on the ground......
