Chapter 41 Summary

The date is March 9, 1986. Evelyn reflects on the change in her since meeting Ninny. She used to lie in bed and imagine tumors growing inside her body. She was so afraid of death; she would imagine the cold steel of the gun against her head. Lately, when these thoughts enter her mind, she forces herself to think of Mrs. Threadgoode's voice. She imagines herself in Whistle Stop, chatting with Dot Weems, getting her hair done at Opal's and eating at the café. She thinks of this more often than the gun now.

The next morning, she realizes she is looking forward to visiting the nursing home. Mrs. Threadgoode's stories seem more real now than her own life. She brings Ninny a Hershey bar and Ninny talks about Smokey. She was there when.....
