Chapter 36 Summary
Onzell told Artis not to go to Birmingham, but he goes anyway on December 30, 1934. He has never been out of Whistle Stop and is amazed by the size of the train station. He thinks it is bigger than Whistle Stop and Troutville together. When he goes out into the street, he walks around in a daze taking in the sights and sounds. Soon, he arrives in Slagsville, which is the black section of Birmingham. He passes bars and restaurants, listening to the sounds of music and watching the people dressed in their finest clothes. He passes a billiards parlor, restaurants and a beauty school. Artis feels like he is at home in this exciting place.
