This chapter takes place in Troutville, Alabama. Troutville was the black section near Whistle Stop. The date is June 12, 1917. Big George and Onzell's twins, Jasper and Artis are born. Jasper is described as the color of a creamy cup of coffee and Artis is as black as coal. At the age of ten, Artis stabs Jasper five times with a penknife. Jasper runs for his mother, but George finds him first and takes him to the doctor. He is so embarrassed by the stabbing that he comes home and beats Artis. Both boys go to bed sore that.....
