Aunt Tranter arrives home from a luncheon engagement, expecting to see Charles visiting with Ernestina. Instead, she encounters the blubbering Mary. Eventually, Aunt Tranter is able to discern that the engagement between Charles and Ernestina has been broken, and she speaks to Dr. Grogan about her niece's condition. Aunt Tranter also learns that Sam has left Charles' employ. She offers to help find him a position, so that he and Mary can be together in Lyme.
Dr. Grogan visits Charles at the White Lion with the intention of formally chastising him for breaking Ernestina's heart. Charles endures the verbal onslaught but eventually is able to convince Dr. Grogan that he does not truly love Ernestina, and that the real crime is committing to a loveless marriage.
