Chapters 48, 49, 50, and 51 Summary

Charles leaves Endicott's and walks down the street to a church, where he spends time thinking and praying about his situation. Charles examines his conscience and determines that it is Sarah who he loves. He knows that, although he has sinned, redemption is the true message of religion, and that he will be forgiven for his decision.

Charles returns to the hotel and writes a letter to Sarah, declaring his love. Even though they do not know each other very well, Charles is confident that they can build a happy life together. He will end his engagement to Ernestina tomorrow, when he goes to Lyme. Included with the letter is the coral and gold brooch, which had been presented to Ernestina in the first ending of the novel.
