Chapters 36, 37, 38, and 39 Summary

Sarah moves into the Endicott's Family Hotel in Exeter that is run by a frugal woman, named Martha Endicott. With the money provided by Charles, Sarah has been able to purchase a few items to decorate her two rooms in the hotel. Sarah also purchases a new nightgown and a green cashmere shawl to showcase her beautiful auburn hair.

In the meantime, Charles meets with Mr. Freeman in London about the change in Charles' financial situation. Initially, Mr. Freeman interprets Charles' visit as a means to increase Ernestina's dowry, but he soon realizes Charles' sincerity and gives his continued blessing on the marriage.

Before Charles leaves, Mr. Freeman offers up the option of Charles taking an executive management position with Mr. Freeman's huge and highly prosperous retail establishment. Charles is appalled.....
