Charles arrives at the home of Dr. Grogan to offer his assistance in finding Sarah. Dr. Grogan soon surmises that Charles' interest in the missing young woman is more than civic minded. Charles admits that he does not know Sarah but is inexplicably drawn to her for some reason. Charles tells Dr. Grogan about the note he had received from Sarah asking to see Charles one last time.
Dr. Grogan offers to go to Sarah in Charles' place and then help Sarah get the treatment she needs at a private asylum in Exeter. Dr. Grogan shares with Charles information about medical cases in which girls and young women abused their own bodies and accused men of rape and other abuses in bids for attention.
