Stephanie Plum is a bounty hunter who works for her cousin's bonds company. Stephanie is given a case to work on at the beginning of the novel, finding a fugitive named Maxine Nowicki. Nowicki was arrested for stealing her boyfriend's car and failed to show up for court. Stephanie begins the case by interviewing the people closest to Maxine, including her boyfriend and her mother. Within a few days of Stephanie taking on the case, she discovers that the people around Maxine are suffering unusual accidents. Maxine's mother is nearly scalped and her friend from work loses a finger. A few days later, a manager at the local convenience store is found dead. All of this combined makes Maxine begin to wonder if there is not something deeper involved in this case besides a.....
