Chapter 2 Summary

Over dinner, Stephanie learns that Maxine called Kuntz and told him she would be sending him an airmail message. Stephanie is not happy with this news because it implies that Stephanie is a long distance from Trenton. After dinner, Stephanie asks Kuntz to call her when he gets the message. Stephanie then returns to the diner hoping Stephanie's friend will be there but she learns that the other waitress has called in sick again. Stephanie goes to the friend's house where she discovers that her finger had been severed in a kitchen accident a few days before. The friend, Margie, has no information on Maxine, however.

The next morning was Sunday and Stephanie slept in. Later in the morning, Kuntz calls her and tells her that someone threw a brick through his window with.....
