Part 4, Chapter 17 Summary

Toohey and his cohorts gloat over the submission of The Banner and Gail Wynand. Wynand won't see Roark, but Roark writes him a letter telling him to start over and that this isn't the "final verdict" on Wynand. It is returned, unread.

Scarret runs the paper, as Wynand resigns himself to defeat and submission. Dominique leaves him and joins Roark at Monadnock Valley, where he is staying for the summer. She sleeps with him, and in the morning, she calls the police to announce that "Mrs. Gail Wynand" is staying at Roark's home and that a valuable ring, a present from Roark, was stolen. She dresses in Roark's pajamas and tells Roark not to dress when he wakes.

The story is front page news in New York. Scarret convinces Wynand to divorce Dominique......
