The time for the showdown between Wynand and Toohey has arrived. Wynand reads Toohey's article in The Banner, calling for Roark to be punished as an example because of his egotistical individualism. When he arrives at his office, he is startled at the reaction of the staff. In Wynand's mind, Toohey is still no threat to him. Scarret says that he had nothing to do with the article. He was out sick. Wynand fires four employees, including Toohey, and tells his staff to recall the paper. Toohey enters Wynand's office, defying Wynand's orders to fire him and that no one enter his office, Wynand is shocked. Toohey claims to be taking a "leave of absence" and says that when he's back, he'll run the paper, calling Wynand an amateur among power-mongers.
