Part 4, Chapter 10 Summary

Peter meets Katie by accident as he walks through the city. She is only visiting from Washington. When he tells her he is unhappy, she can only see his plight as common, just as she sees her own plight. She is only one among many unhappy, rejected women. She cannot feel for him as an individual or even for herself. Peter says that his sin was not marrying her when it was what he wanted. She promises to call him when she's back in the city.
