Part 3, Chapter 9 Summary

Gail and Dominique go sailing during the summer. They discuss philosophy, and Wynand confesses that he hates integrity. He says that if she were a man, he would destroy her because he destroys all men with minds of their own.

Back at the penthouse, Wynand tells Dominique that he's not ready to build the great Wynand building he envisions. Dominique tries to tell Wynand that Toohey is dangerous and asks him to fire Toohey, whom she claims wants to gain power through control of the paper. Wynand knows that Toohey lacks the ability to build up a newspaper like he has, so Wynand underestimates Toohey's ability. Wynand is not afraid of Toohey and won't listen to Dominique.

Afterwards, Wynand and Dominique don't speak, through a mutual understanding......
