Part 3, Chapter 4 Summary

Dominique and Wynand are leaving on their cruise. She asks what the name of his private yacht, the I Do, means. It is Wynand's personal response to all the people who have told him, "You don't run things." At dinner their first night out, they agree that loving everyone equally is to hate mankind. It devalues what is noble and good in mankind to love what is low and common. They go up on deck and view the vast ocean and sky, agreeing that these sublime images reinforce the idea of greatness in mankind. Only small people feel small in comparison. Wynand proposes, and she accepts only to continue her self-punishment. Dominique has been expecting a sexual fling, but Wynand wants to wait for their marriage. They part for the evening.
