Part 3, Chapter 2 Summary

Peter talks to Dominique, after a party. Peter was bored stiff but behaved politely, while Dominique laughed at theosophy in front of their hostess, who believes in it. Peter repeats a book review as his own opinion, and Dominique says that she read the same review. When Peter tries to get Dominique to profess an opinion, she parrots common sentiments. Peter feels an unnerving emptiness in his marriage. Dominique has been the perfect wife, bringing nothing to their home but clothes and never disagreeing with him. She submits to his sexual desires, but leaves him somehow unsatisfied. He talks with her, but he can't get anything out of her. In desperation, he tries to get her to voice a real opinion. Peter says that Dominique's soul is gone and demands to.....
