Part 3, Chapter 1 Summary

Gail Wynand is at the brink of suicide. Holding a gun to his head, he can't even feel terror. He drops the gun. This day has been a typical day at the office. He watched a board meeting without being noticed and left in the middle of a speaker's sentence. He is planning Stoneridge Development community on Long Island and must find an architect. He asks Scarret about "The Gallant Gallstone," a book that the Banner has been mentioning constantly, giving it free publicity. He finds out that Toohey is behind it. Wynand instructs Scarret to stop mentioning it.

Toohey tries to convince Wynand to hire Peter. He asks Wynand to meet Dominique. Wynand declines, and Toohey says that he's sent Wynand a present, a kind of bribe. Toohey expects a call.....
