Stoddard returns the day before the planned temple opening. He is met by Toohey and then immediately cancels the opening. Toohey mocks Roark in his "One Small Voice" column, calling him a blasphemer and saying that the temple glorifies Roark's ego. He calls the article an obituary. Toohey creates the spin that Roark has attacked religion and begins an uproar. The newspapers attack Roark, and the public is outraged. Toohey finds that Stoddard is putty in his hands, confused by Roark's originality. Prodded by Toohey, Stoddard sues Roark for damages. Toohey also manipulates Stoddard into planning to make the temple into the home for "subnormal children" that Toohey always wanted.
