For three months, Roark has labored in the quarry. He sweats and battles granite to remove himself from the outside world, which has defeated his genius. Meanwhile, Dominique has been nearby, living in isolation at Francon's Connecticut house. She feels less alone in this isolation. Dominique visits the quarry to gawk at the workers, who both attract and repel her by their labor. There she sees Roark, who she does not know, and she is immediately physically overcome. Attracted by his taut physique and insolent manner, she pursues him, coming to the quarry to watch as he works. They do not speak, but Dominique is overcome with both attraction and distaste.
