Part 1, Chapter 9 Summary
Finally, Roark finds work with the eccentric John Erik Snyte. Snyte has five diverse designers working in different historical styles. Roark is hired to play the role of Mr. Modernistic, the modern thinker. The designers each work on a project separately, and then Snyte chooses one plan and modifies it with the other plans to come up with the design. Roark can create innovative designs, but the final projects will not be his own.
New York building unions go on strike. Francon's office is tense. Peter, feeling the stress, yells at Heyer. He goes to Katie again, but she isn't there. He thinks she has gone to a strike meeting to hear her uncle address the strikers, and when he goes there, he sees her passing out leaflets. They go into the meeting and listen to Toohey give an entrancing speech on the socialist ideals of collectivism and selflessness. Peter...
