When Gardner Mandell Gruber meets Hari in the Palace gardens, they talk about the glories of nature. Gruber does not want to be promoted to Chief Gardener and be forced to work indoors. Chapter 2 describes how the high level of security guards against outside threats, but not disgruntled insiders. Dors swiftly disarms a would-be assassin and gets him to name his cohorts, by threat of torture. Outraged, Cleon sentences them to death as an example. Dors' reputation as a Tiger Woman grows.
