Katherine Danziger

The protagonist of the novel, seventeen year-old Katherine is a senior in high school with no definite goals for her life when she meets Michael and falls in love. Katherine is very logical and realistic but that does not prevent her from being swept off her feet by Michael. Katherine and Michael are determined that their love will last forever even though their parents think they are moving too quickly. Katherine continues to adapt her life to Michael's, until summer jobs in different states allow Katherine the space to reevaluate how her life has changed, and she decides she can no longer be with Michael.
