The Flying Carpets

The flying carpets represent the notions of childhood and fantasy. It is never revealed whether the carpets truly fly or not, so they could either be truly magical, or a product of the children’s fantasy.

Joey

Joey symbolizes ambition through his relationship with the boy. Joey’s ability to fly his carpet high above his garden motivates the boy to increase his ambition and fly higher.

The Fluffs of Dust

The fluffs of dust symbolize the fleeting nature of childish pleasures. Throughout the story, the boy remarks on his love for his flying carpet. However, near the end of the story, the boy disregards the carpet and dust piles up on it, showing that he has gone from loving the carpet to neglecting it over a few months.
