Summary

In “Dogs Go Wolf,” two sisters, ages four and seven, have been left alone at an island fishing camp off the coast of Florida. Their mother left them in the care of her friends, a couple named Smokey Joe and Melanie, but when word came that a hurricane was imminent, the couple fled on a boat, leaving the girls behind, along with Melanie's dog. The girls' mother has a history of negligence, working nights and leaving the girls home alone, and coming home drunk.

The older sister tries to calm the younger by telling her stories. The girls eat all of the food in Smokey Joe and Melanie's cabin and feed the dog, which has escaped from the house but returns for meals and to growl at the sisters. The cabin's generator dies. The older sister is resourceful, catching crabs...
