SuperMexican is Malu's nickname for her mother, and it symbolizes Malu's idea of her mother's character. Magaly wants Malu to be proud of her Mexican heritage, and Malu's nickname is somewhat derogatory.

Michael gives Malu the box of worry dolls when she is about to move to Chicago, and they symbolize his understanding that she is worried about the move. While Malu dismisses the power of the dolls, she does use them.

Zines are the booklets Malu creates, and they symbolize her need for a creative outlet and a way to express herself.

A senorita is symbolic of the perfect young Mexican girl. Malu feels that her mother wants her to be this perfect young Mexican girl, but she hates the stereotype and clings to her punk style.
