Dragonstone

Dragonstone is the island that the Targaryen's move to when they leave Valyria. It had been the westernmost outpost of Valyrian power before the Doom. The Targaryens have a castle on the dark, gloomy island, but they do not use it as the seat of their power because it is not actually connected to the rest of Westeros.

King's Landing

King's Landing was nothing more than a small fishing village before the Targaryens arrived. It was the first place Aegon I set foot, and once he had conquered the realm, he decided to build a new city as the site of his throne rather than adopt one of the existing cities.
