Chapter 11 Summary

Speedy, Smitty, Senator, and Burgie make their way beyond the barbed wire fence for the first LP. Smitty gets first watch. They all settle in on their ponchos lying side by side, awaiting what the night will bring. Senator takes advantage of the time and falls asleep. A few hours later, Speedy wakes Smitty and Ottenburger, because there is movement along the tree line about seventy-five yards from them. Senator wakes up on his own when he hears the movement. Twenty minutes go by as the men sit deadly silent. There are gooks coming their way, laughing as they pass. The men don't move or make a sound, so they won't be heard by the enemy. The handset is also turned down to a whisper. A voice comes over the handset, asking the men to press once if they are in trouble, so...
