One morning Henry is woken in the middle of the night by Catherine stirring in bed. She is having pains, but they are not very regular, so Henry goes back to sleep. They begin to come more regularly, and Henry wakes again and calls the doctor. The doctor tells them to come straight to the hospital, and agrees to meet them there. Catherine undresses, and gets into bed. The pains are increasing in intensity and frequency, and Catherine is excited, anxious "for it to all be over." She is brave; she calls the larger pains "good ones," and is disappointed and even embarrassed when the pains subside. She urges Henry to go and have breakfast, and above all not to worry. Henry agrees, and goes to a nearby café to have.....
