Book 4, Chapter 37 Summary

Henry rows all night. They are making good time, but his whole body aches and his hands blistered and bleeding. Catherine suggests that they open the big umbrella and let the wind take them for a while. Her plan works, and Henry is able to rest for a few moments. He has some brandy, and is warmed and cheered by it. Catherine is ever cheerful, optimistic, and obliging, even as they are almost bashed against the shore several times. Catherine rows for a while and Henry has some sandwiches and more brandy. He cautions her to watch the oars do not hit her stomach. "If it did," she replies, "life might be much simpler."

By daylight they are sure they are past the Swiss border. They come to a port, and get out to have breakfast. They are tired but triumphant to have made it. They have a hearty breakfast...
