Book 4, Chapter 33 Summary

Henry reaches Milan and jumps off the train. It is early morning, and he goes into a café for a coffee and a piece of bread. The man behind the counter asks him for news of the retreat, and Henry pretends that he does not know what the man is talking about. The man tells him that he saw Henry jump off the train, and implies that he can help deserters to obtain leave papers, and offers Henry a place to stay. Henry thanks him, and leaves. He goes to the hospital, and sees his porter and his porter's wife. They are overjoyed to see him, and relieved that he is safe. Henry asks them about Catherine, and they tell him that she left for Stresa two days ago with another.....
