Book 3, Chapter 30 Summary

The four men come upon a bridge, and the drivers tell Henry to cross it first, in case it is wired with explosives. Henry reasons that the bridge wouldn't be wired to blow with the weight of just one man, and goes first, instructing the others to follow him one at a time. As Henry is crossing the bridge, he spots a German vehicle, followed by a German bicycle unit. They are not spotted at that moment, but just as they reach the edges of Udine, Aymo, one of the men, is killed when they are spotted by what they believe to be the bicycle unit. They then realize it is actually the Italian rear guard firing on them, and they decide to wait somewhere until dark to continue.
