Book 3, Chapter 29 Summary

By noon they are stuck in a muddy patch of road approximately ten kilometers from Udine, their destination. They are all huddled around the car trying to find a way to get it out, when the two soldiers they had picked up earlier begin to walk away. Henry orders them to halt and to help cut brush to get the car out of the mud. The soldiers continue to walk away, and Henry fires his gun at them. He misses, and they begin to run. He fires again, and hits one of them. The other one disappears down the hill. Bonello takes Henry's gun and shoots the wounded one to kill him. They all agree that the soldiers were scum, and continue to try to dig the car out. It is.....
