Book 3, Chapter 25 Summary

Henry's return to the front is not a pleasant one. The first person he sees is the major, who updates him on the losses that the regiment has suffered, and tells him to take over the four cars on the Bainsizza. He tells Henry that he was lucky to be hit early on, and Henry agrees, although the major also says that the following year was expected to be worse. Henry tells his major that he's glad to be back, and the major tells him that if he'd been sent away like Henry he would not have returned. To Henry's question if it was "that bad," the major replies that it is so bad and worse.
