Book 2, Chapter 17 Summary

The operation takes two and a half hours, and afterwards he feels terrible. Catherine is on night duty, but as she predicted, he does not want her. Three new patients have arrived at the hospital. Miss Barkley is extremely popular with the other nurses because nobody else wants to be on night duty, and Catherine does it every night. Hardly anyone rings at night, and the two are for the most part left alone. Helen Ferguson, Catherine's friend from the other hospital, helps them keep their secret. She tells Henry that people are starting to suspect something, and that Catherine is getting increasingly tired from working night duty every night. She tells Henry that he should give her the night off occasionally, and cautions him not to get Catherine into trouble.
