Book 1, Chapter 12 Summary

Henry is shipped to the hospital in Milan because there are better treatment facilities and to free up beds for when the offensive started. The night before Henry is to leave, Rinaldi and the major from their mess come to visit. They ask him if he thinks the US will declare war on Austria and Turkey, and Henry drunkenly affirms that it will. They are all drunk, and continue to joke about US involvement in the war, and about how they should all go to Rome together. Henry jokes that the turkey is their national bird, and that he doubts it. They are causing a disturbance with their loud banter, and as they leave to go, the major offhandedly gives Henry the good news.....
