Book 1, Chapter 5 Summary

The very next day Henry goes back to the hospital to see Catherine. He meets the head nurse, who questions him thoroughly about why an American should be working with the Italian army. He replies that he was in Italy and spoke Italian. She in return informs Henry that Miss Barkley would be off duty at 7pm that evening.

Earlier that day, Henry had been to inspect the trenches. It is his job as an ambulance driver to ensure that vehicle escape routes are available when there is to be an offensive. He checks the roads, has a drink with one of the captains who is waiting in the trenches for the offensive to begin, and drives back to Gorizia. He has dinner, then goes to call on Catherine again.
