Book 1, Chapter 3 Summary

Henry takes the major's advice and goes on leave. When he returns it is spring, and his unit is still stationed in the same town. The fighting will begin again in a week's time, and Henry returns to find the town changed, alive with people and springtime, new faces, new hospitals, and British men and women working in the town. He goes up to his room, and finds his roommate and friend, Rinaldi, asleep in bed. Rinaldi wakes up, kisses and hugs him, Italian style, and begins to pepper him with questions. "Did you have any beautiful adventures?" Rinaldi asks, and promptly begins telling Henry about the current love of his life, a Miss Barkley.
