Summary

Maya feels betrayed because her sister Lauren talked to Claire behind he back. During dinner, she explodes and says that she wants to find her biological mother and learn about "our story" (276). Lauren says that she already has a story, there with her family (276). Maya's father says that she should wait until she has another "adventure," and Maya is offended by the word. They talk about visiting Maya's mother at rehab, but Maya asks whether they are going to pretend that everything is "fine" (276). Their father excuses himself from the table and Lauren confronts her sister. Maya says that pictures along the staircase make her think that their parents hate her for "ruining their perfect family" and that it represents her and her "freak experience" (278).
