Heins acknowledges the "dearth" of literature about Vietnam for young adults, and notes that "Fortunately, [Myers] is a writer of skill, maturity, and judgement." Heins compares this novel to Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage in its depiction of "the chaos and carnage of war."
