Richard Perry
The main character, very observant and distanced from life, over the course of the book he grows up and learns to better understand the people around him and the people he left at home. The book chronicles his journey from child to adulthood. He knows that the events that are happening around him are shaping him and he worries about how he will fit in when he arrives back in the World. Naively, in the beginning he doesn't think the war will have an effect on him. The fighting is almost over, so going to Vietnam and being in the army at all is just something for him to do. He doesn't know what the next step of his life should be, so he postponed the decision by joining the army.
