Chapter 13 Summary

Christmas is three days away and talk has started up again about a truce and going home. Stewart, wanting to be promoted, tells them not to relax yet. Though there is supposed to be at least a temporary truce for the holidays, fighting picks up instead. The sounds of fighting become constant and they hear that now the regular North Vietnamese army is the one doing the fighting, and less of the makeshift guerrilla Vietcong.

When all the major cities are hit from Saigon to the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ), Stewart volunteers their squad to replace a reconnaissance team that was wiped out. He doesn't tell the boys directly, though, claiming that their squad was selected because of Lt. Gearhart's training. On the patrol, they set up an ambush and Perry and Peewee watch the back end of the squad. A flare goes up from their own camp...
